In the lead-up to the release of Netflix’s adaptation, the show has been intensely scrutinized by the original series’ fans, especially after news broke two years into development that the creators of the cartoon, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, had walked away from the project due to creative differences. Fans couldn’t help but see foreboding echoes of the 2010 M. Night Shyamalan live-action film adaptation that is widely considered to be a terrible movie.
Now, with “Sleepy Hollow” showrunner Albert Kim at the helm as creator, writer, and showrunner, Netflix has finally debuted its long-delayed take on “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” And although the series is far from the mess that was M. Night Shyamalan’s ill-conceived and white-washed film adaptation, it will leave fans wishing the streamer had left DiMartino and Konietzko’s masterpiece alone.
As with “One Piece,” another of Netflix’s live-action adaptations, much of the casting here is inspired. This is especially true of the villains: Dallas Liu provides the perfect balance of rage and vulnerability to Aang’s enemy, Zuko, the emo prince of the Fire Nation. Elizabeth Yu, as Zuko’s twisted sister Azula, is just as ruthless but more grounded than the crazed character in the cartoon, and Daniel Dae Kim gives the appropriate arch-villain gravitas to Zuko and Azula’s father, the heartless Fire Lord Ozai. And Ken Leung’s sleazy, self-serving Fire Nation Commander Zhao often steals the spotlight even as a secondary villain.
